Over 3 mln pilgrims cross Iran borders for Arbaeen

Qomnews , 3 Sep 2023 - 16:35

According to an official, more than three million people have crossed the border between Iran and Iraq in recent weeks for the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

The commander of the Arbaeen headquarters of the Iranian Police made the announcement on Saturday.

General Mohammad Sharafi went on to say that the majority of pilgrims have chosen the Mehran border crossing.

He asserted that that more than three million pilgrims have left the country via six border crossings with Iraq during the Arbaeen season, which marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), the third Shiite Imam

This year, six border crossings are open for Arbaeen pilgrims, and both Iran and Iraq have signed agreements to improve services, facilities, and border security during the pilgrimage season.

The Arbaeen pilgrimage will conclude with a large gathering in Karbala on September 6.

Arbaeen, one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, grandson of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).
